Pressed Linen Head Doll on Clockwork Tricycle, 1870

$60.00 (Fixed shipping cost)

OVERVIEW: This is a classic early American clockwork toy, probably by Althof Bergmann, in excellent original working condition.

DOLL: The doll has a PRESSED LINEN head from the Hawkins patent of 1869. He has painted features including blue eyes and side curls painted in front of his ears. He has hands and feet of pressed brass and his limbs are a metal armature. He is wearing his all-original clothing of shirt, pants and jacket. There could be touchup to his forehead – a blacklight is inconclusive as it could just be wear.

TRICYCLE: The tricycle is tin and the clockwork mechanism is housed behind the doll in a stenciled covering. The covering shows two patent dates from 1870. Some of these toys are
“back-wound”, but this gentleman is key-wound, and I wind him up with needle-nose pliers. The mechanism is in working condition, and he pedals away while turning left and right on a zigzag path.

EXAMINATION: The toy and doll have expected minor age related wear. Overall presentation and working condition for the age is excellent.
